How To Build A Bookcase Room Divider – Part 1

Building your own bookcase room divider is a great way to save yourself extra money, while also making sure that you end up with the perfect divider for your particular situation. By following the steps below, you can begin building your divider. The steps are basic outlines of the process that you will need to take the complete the project, so you will need to make sure that you are taking your time through each one, to ensure that your finished product is going to be of high quality.

Step #1) Gather Your Materials – First you are going to need to consider the type of materials you are going to build the divider from. To create a beautiful divider, we recommend that you consider using oak furniture grade plywood. The material is slightly more expensive than other types of woods, but makes for excellent furniture pieces and accepts stain well.

Step #2) Measure Your Space – After you have a few sheets of plywood available, you will need to determine how large the divider is going to be. If you are planning on having it higher than 8’ tall, or 8’ wide, you will need to purchase extra long materials that can handle the extended width and height.

Step #3) Create A Plan – Now you will need to draw out the plans for your divider. When you are creating the plans, you want to make sure that you have provided the measurements for each of the sides, as well as the top and bottom. This will help you ensure that the frame is going to be squared whenever you are ready to begin assembling, and keep you from having to guess about the measurements.

Step #4) Cut The Sides, Top And Bottom – With your measurements drawn out on paper, you will want to begin cutting the wood to use for both sides. If you purchased plywood, you will want to cut the strips in 12” widths, depending how large your books are.

Step #5) Cut The Horizontal Shelves – Now you can cut the horizontal shelves for the divider. You want to take the measurements from the inside edge of each of the sides, to ensure that they are going to fit properly. The shelves, typically, should be the same width as the top and bottom of your divider.
